The IT Department
You Can Actually Afford.

TinkerForce looks after the technology for small businesses around Horsley, Leatherhead, Guildford and Woking — the hardware, the Wi-Fi, the backups, and the software that off-the-shelf tools never quite fit. Honest advice, plain English, no tie-in contracts.

What I Do
  • Local & remote
  • No jargon
  • No tie-in contracts

Small Businesses, Properly Looked After

Hello — I’m Janusz, though everyone around here calls me Yanni. I’ve spent years looking after computers, networks and servers, and TinkerForce is for the businesses round here that don’t have an IT department of their own.

Most small firms are quietly running on a laptop, a router, and a spreadsheet that everything depends on. I make that arrangement reliable — and where off-the-shelf software doesn’t fit how you work, I build the small pieces that do. No pressure, no confusing tech speak, just practical help that fits the way you actually operate.

TinkerForce is deliberately small: it’s just me, working alongside a full-time job. Visits and calls happen after 2pm on weekdays and on Saturday mornings — and that’s also why the prices are what they are. No office, no van, no receptionist.

It means I’m not right for everyone. If you need somebody on call all day, every day, I’m the wrong choice, and I’d rather say so now than let you find out later. What I offer instead is careful work from a named person who knows your setup — and a willingness to take on the one- and two-person businesses that bigger firms turn away.

What I Get Called About

  • The accounts spreadsheet has become the system nobody dares touch
  • Wi-Fi drops out in the back office, or the card machine loses signal
  • Nobody knows whether the backups actually work — until the day they’re needed
  • The laptop that holds everything together is six years old and quietly dying
  • You need a small system that does one specific job, and nothing off the shelf fits

Every enquiry starts with a free conversation — online, or at your premises if you’re local. Weekdays after 2pm, or Saturday morning: whatever suits you better.

What I Do

Three ways to work together — advice, software, and ongoing care. No upselling, no lock-in.

Consultancy from £70/hour · Custom software quoted per project · First conversation free

Advice & Consultancy

  • Choosing hardware, servers and broadband to suit your budget
  • Wi-Fi and network design that holds up under real use
  • Backups, security and basic GDPR hygiene — checked and documented
  • A straight answer on repair versus replace, with no upselling

Buy once, properly, instead of twice, badly.

Custom Software

  • Small applications built around how your business really works
  • Replace the spreadsheet that everything depends on
  • Records, logs, bookings, job sheets, compliance evidence
  • Runs on your own hardware, or hosted and maintained by me

If off-the-shelf doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fit.

Ongoing Support

  • Keeping what you already have running — whether I built it or not
  • Monitoring, updates and tested backups
  • Wi-Fi, email and hosting looked after month to month
  • A named person who answers when something matters

Month to month, no contract. Start with maintenance — if something’s worth improving, I’ll tell you.

What It Costs

No hourly surprises, no tie-in contracts, no minimum number of staff. These are business rates — help at home is priced separately, just below.

One-off advice

£70 per hour

  • On-site or remote, whichever suits you
  • One hour minimum, then in 15-minute steps
  • A written summary of what I found and what I’d do

Essential

£60 per month

  • Monitoring, updates and tested backups
  • Domains, email and certificates watched before they lapse
  • 1 hour of support each month
  • Replies after 2pm on weekdays, and Saturday mornings

Standard

£120 per month

  • Everything in Essential
  • 3 hours of support each month
  • Wi-Fi and network health checks
  • Quarterly review, and priority over one-off work

The small print, in plain English. Extra time is £65/hour on a plan and £70/hour without one. Plans run month to month — cancel any time with a week’s notice. No VAT is added; I’m not VAT registered.

How support hours work. Your included hour covers remote help or on-site work — whichever suits. On-site visits within 10 miles include travel in the hour; beyond that, travel is charged at the hourly rate. Most things are sorted remotely, which is quicker for you and costs you nothing in travel.

What isn’t included. Hardware, parts and software licences are charged at cost — I’ll always tell you the price before buying anything, and add nothing on top. Out-of-hours work (after 18:00, or Sundays) is by arrangement. Travel is included within 10 miles of Horsley.

And the honest bit. Most IT firms won’t take on a business with one or two people — their minimum charges often run to £140–£500 a month, which makes you not worth their while. I have no minimum, and no contract. If I don’t think you need any of this, I’ll say so — and the first conversation is always free.

Not a business? I help at home too.

Slow computers, patchy Wi-Fi, a laptop that won’t start, or years of files that need rescuing from an old machine — the same honest advice, at kitchen-table scale.

Homes & Home Offices

  • New device set up properly £55
  • Wi-Fi that keeps dropping out £60
  • Slow computer rescued and tidied £55
  • Everything moved to a new machine £60
  • Phone or email migration £50
  • Remote help, up to 30 minutes £25

Fixed prices for the usual jobs. Anything bigger is £50 for the first hour, then £40 an hour — and I’ll always tell you before doing extra work.

Open Source First

If a free, open-source tool already does the job, I’ll tell you — even though it earns me less.

  • No lock-in. Your data stays yours, in a format you can take elsewhere.
  • Your own hardware where it makes sense — not rented back to you from somebody else’s cloud.
  • No licence resale, no vendor commissions, no referral fees. I’m not on anyone’s payroll.
  • No tracking, anywhere. No analytics on this site, no advertising pixels, no data harvesting.
  • Big tech last, not first. Where a self-hosted or open alternative exists that genuinely works, that’s what I’ll recommend.

Most of what a small business actually needs already exists, free, and often better than the paid alternative. What you pay me for is knowing which one fits — and setting it up so it works and keeps working.

Not Sure What You Need? That’s Fine.

You don’t need to have it all worked out before you get in touch — that’s what the first conversation is for. Tell me what’s annoying you or what you’re trying to achieve, and I’ll tell you honestly whether it’s worth doing, worth doing differently, or worth not doing at all.
